Bonitas GP Network update
| Last year, Bonitas took the first bold steps towards changing the way people view medical aid with the introduction of the Bonitas GP Network. We are very pleased with the level of acceptance we have experienced by medical professionals and members alike! Thus far, over 4000 general practitioners have joined our network, In terms of coverage nearly 95% of our members are within 10km’s of a network doctor. |
| |
| The GP’s contracted to our network have committed to the Bonitas tariff guidelines and are paid performance incentive fees. The GP network ensures that members receive cost and quality healthcare and the contracted doctors will not balance bill members. |
| |
The GP network contracting process is ongoing and growing and going forward we extend our invitation to those GP’s that wish to join our network subject to the conditions of the contract. As a broker we would also like to keep you abreast of all the new updates and initiatives. |

Pay for Performance
As part of our incentive in encouraging more cost-effective practice, Rank 1 GPs receive an enhanced consultation fees of 10 percent above the NHRPL and Rank 2 GPs receive in excess of 5 percent. These fees do not impact on our member’s day-to-day benefit limits for traditional options nor will it impact savings in respect of the new generation options.
In addition, and in an effort to reduce hospital admissions while improving health outcomes, doctors can benefit from both incentive payments and a share of savings generated by encouraging:
- Better control and testing of diabetic patients to reduce hospital admission rates for the short term implications of diabetes.
- Improved rates of LDL (cholesterol) testing to improve the management of ischaemic heart disease.
- Increased registration of HIV positive patients on the Aid to AIDS program.
- Reduced asthma related hospital admissions.
- Reduced hospital admissions for epilepsy.
- Reduced hospital admissions for spinal fusion.

Performance monitoring
Every GP contracted to the Network is monitored through the REPI (Risk Equalised Performance Indicator) model, developed by Medscheme Health Risk Solutions.
Through REPI, the risk equalised cost-effectiveness of each GP’s practice is measured and ranked from most cost-effective (Rank 1) to least cost-effective (Rank 3). These rankings are updated quarterly with the poor performing GPs counseled via peer review, facilitated by the Independent Practitioner Associations (IPA’s). |
